A Future for the Humanities?

A discussion on humanistic disciplines in our universities.

Time & Location

May 26, 2017
The Gold Lounge, Stanford Faculty Club
439 Lagunita Dr, Stanford, CA 94305, USA

Description

The humanistic disciplines in our universities, especially the study of literature and the arts, have become notorious for frivolity, obscurity, modishness, and ideological grandstanding. Do they have a future? Should they? Steven Justice, who has taught in the nation's premier English department for thirty years, argued that they should and do, and that current pressures offer a promising chance to reform them.

Prof. Steven Justice

Chancellor's Professor of English, UC Berkeley
