Description

Modern Music's Dilemma: Escapist Beauty or the Ugliness of Truth?

Among the immutable qualities that characterize humans are a yearning for Perfect Truth and for Perfect Beauty. Western avant-garde culture – the culture of the academy – has long insisted that the two are irreconcilable. We have been instructed to choose between “Beauty” (in suspect quotes) and the Pain of Truth (an axiom). It’s not surprising that composers who embrace this false antimony should retreat from euphony in music, at least insofar as they feel any obligation to Truth. But given that the choice itself is misleading, we explored with Professor George Barth, ways in which some musical “outliers” transcended its corrosive effects.
