Platonic Seminar: Plato's Laches

Undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates are invited to join Zephyr for this Platonic Seminar on Plato's Laches on the nature of courage. No prior reading is required. We will read and discuss the text together.

What is courage? Is it mere boldness, mere willingness to stand firm and face danger—or does it essentially involve some sort of knowledge, some sort of reasoned responsiveness to what is appropriate in a given set of circumstances? If the latter, what is the relation of this knowledge to courage? Isn't it possible for such knowledge to actually undermine courage? Come and explore these and other questions with Socrates and his interlocutors.
