About the Event

Starting this term, Zephyr is hosting a weekly Tuesday symposium on Plato's Euthyphro, for undergraduates and those who have recently graduated. Unlike other reading groups, this one takes place in a somewhat unusual format--but a format which we contend conforms to Plato's true intention in writing dialogues.

We will be reading the dialogue together, out loud, and discussing it, as if we were approaching it for the first time. This ensures we are an active participant in the dialogue, ready to philosophise as we engage with and wrestle with the text's dramas and puzzles.

The two rules for this format are as follows:

1) Either purchase and bring a copy of this version of the text (Four Texts on Socrates, trans. by Thomas and Grace West), or ask Zephyr to set one aside for you. This ensures we all have the same edition.

2) No reading ahead, and no reading secondary sources discussing the dialogue! This rule is imperative to ensure we approach each scene with fresh, philosophic eyes. Each week, we will let our participants know at what point we left off. If you miss sessions, no need to worry: you may of course read to catch up with the rest of us, but that far only--no further.

Led by Nathan Pinkoski, the symposium will run from 530-7PM most Tuesdays during Stanford's term time. Drinks and dinner will be served.
