About the Event
Topic
The Problems of Metaphysics
Description
Is the passage of time an illusion? Is space a thing—something like a giant container for the world’s objects—or simply a way of talking about the way things are related to each other? Does everything that happens have an explanation for why it happens? If so, does this pose a threat to our freedom and moral responsibility? Is the world really just atoms (or whatever the fundamental particles are)—or are there material objects over and above the atoms and their arrangements? This summer, we will explore these and other questions of metaphysics through classic and contemporary texts.
